Dr Sabela Atencia Fernández

RCVS and European Specialist in Veterinary Internal Medicine
Sabela graduated from the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, in 2008. Following graduation, she moved to the United Kingdom, where she worked in small animal general practice before completing a rotating internship at Davies Veterinary Specialists.
She subsequently undertook a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine at University College Dublin, Ireland, where she also completed a Master of Veterinary Medicine (MVM). In 2017, she became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Companion Animals).
Following completion of her residency, Sabela worked in referral practice in both the United Kingdom and Spain. She is currently Head of the Internal Medicine Department at AniCura Vetsia Referral Hospital in Madrid, one of Spain’s largest multidisciplinary referral centres. She is also Director of the hospital’s ECVIM Residency Programme and serves as a part-time Associate Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid.
Her main clinical interests include respiratory medicine, endoscopy, infectious diseases and complex internal medicine cases. She has a particular interest in chronic respiratory diseases in dogs and cats and enjoys working closely with first-opinion veterinarians to help manage challenging medical cases and achieve the best possible outcomes for their patients.
Sabela is passionate about clinical teaching, mentoring and postgraduate training, and particularly enjoys supporting veterinary colleagues through collaborative case discussions and teleconsulting.
